Holiday season road travel

Before you embark on your holiday journey it can be helpful to check your auto policy limits. According to the 2024 Deloitte Holiday Travel Survey, 65% of Americans plan to take a road trip this holiday season. With more drivers on the road, it is important to review the details of your coverage. Exploring options such as comprehensive or collision insurance may provide additional coverage in instances of theft, accident, or hail.

Holiday driving tips

Winter driving comes with its own set of concerns. Help alleviate the stress of a long travel day by properly preparing your vehicle and considering some of our holiday driving tips:

Drive with care

While Arizona may not be known for an excess of snow or ice, there’s no telling where your holiday plans may take you. Taking time to inspect your vehicle and restock your winter emergency kit can help prevent problems later. The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) suggests when driving in conditions of sleet or snow to increase your following distance, so you will have ample time to stop for vehicles ahead of you.

If you find yourself in a winter emergency, do not overexert yourself, stay with your vehicle, and let your car be seen. Try to put bright markers on the antenna or windows and keep the interior dome light on. Emergency roadside assistance can be a helpful insurance add-on that can potentially provide support in case of a breakdown or accident during the holiday season. Reach out to your agent to discuss the advantages of this coverage.

Inspect your car

Before hitting the highway, it can be helpful to inspect your car’s tires, lights, windshield wipers, and cooling system. Tires can lose their pressure over time, and it is recommended by the NHTSA to inspect your tires at least once a month and before long road trips. Aim to check the tires when they have not been driven for at least three hours and replace tires approximately every six years. Ideally, each tire should be filled to the vehicle’s recommended inflation pressure, which can be found in your owner’s manual and on a label on the driver's side door frame. Colder weather can also affect your battery’s ability to start. Therefore, it can be a good idea to have your mechanic check your battery and belts, for any additional needed repairs or replacements.

Prepare your emergency kit

If your winter travels will take you into more inclement weather and possibly even snowstorms, it can be beneficial to prepare for the unexpected.

For winter-related driving, the NHTSA suggests stocking your vehicle with:

  • Snow shovel

  • Broom

  • Blanket

  • Ice scraper

  • Sand or kitty litter

In case of other driving emergencies be sure to have on hand:

  • Jumper cables

  • Flashlight

  • Phone charger

  • First aid kit

  • Warning devices such as flares or emergency markers

  • Additional water, non-perishable snacks, and any necessary medications

Avoid risky driving behaviors

With so many fun parties to attend, it can be easy to get distracted on your way to the festivities. As per the NHTSA, take care to minimize distractions on the road. Familiarize yourself with the route before leaving and check the weather before departing. Utilize GPS and be sure to switch your phone to driving mode. If engaging in a longer drive, pre-plan your stops and switch drivers, or take a break as soon as you feel drowsy. Never text while driving, obey posted speed limits, and always drive sober. It may be tempting to indulge in some holiday punch, but both alcohol and drugs can impair safe and responsible driving by affecting your coordination, judgment, perception, and reaction time. Take extra caution in parking lots

Shop till you drop! During the holiday season, it's no secret that Americans swarm to shopping centers and malls to stock up on gifts, decorations, and delicious treats. Take extra caution during this busy time of year when parking in lots. Check your rearview for pedestrians crossing before backing up and opt for parking spots in well-lit areas. Store purchases in your trunk, and out of view, and have your keys ready when you approach your vehicle.

Enjoy your days filled with warm mugs of hot cocoa, piles of presents, and gatherings  overflowing with endless laughter. The holiday season is a moment to come together, relax, and rejoice. While this time of year can feel busy and rushed, Access Insurance Agency of Arizona, LLC hopes you slow down and prioritize your safety. No matter your plans, we wish you a holiday season of happiness, health and joy!
